Meet Betsy

Betsy Vega is a small business owner, educator, and lifelong community volunteer. The daughter of Argentine and Colombian immigrants, Betsy put herself through college working odd jobs and became the first in her family to earn a Master’s Degree in Business.

As a small business owner and single mom, Betsy feels the challenges facing working families, from the high costs of housing and increasing local taxes to not feeling safe on Salem’s streets.

Betsy is at her best when she’s serving her neighbors. She’s on the Marion County Sheriff’s Advisory Committee, helping to direct how best to keep our community safe. She also works on Salem’s Tourism Board to attract exciting and new events to our city.

Betsy knows Salem deserves better, and she’s running to change the culture at City Hall to deliver results for families.

Focused on What Matters Most

  • Betsy is a renter herself. As your city councilor, she’ll fight for more housing options that meet the needs of working families and young people so no one is forced to leave Salem in search of an affordable place to live. She opposes efforts to raise taxes on your paychecks and property.

  • As a member of the Marion County Sheriff’s Advisory Committee, Betsy has witnessed up close the issues that drive families’ safety concerns. Homelessness, drug use, and violent crime have residents wondering if they can walk the streets of their own city safely. Our officials need to take that seriously. Betsy wants to keep violent offenders in jail and make Salem a place of healing for those struggling with mental illness and drug addiction by getting them real, life-changing treatment.

  • State policies are driving up unemployment and making Oregon unattractive for workers and businesses alike. Betsy has helped countless families start small businesses and hire workers. She’ll stand up to politicians who think they can tax us into prosperity and she'll advocate for policies that empower families to achieve the American dream. Betsy understands Salem is strong only when both its workers and businesses are healthy.

  • Politicians have tried to convince us that letting people live on the sidewalks and in the bushes is the most compassionate thing for our homeless population. The results speak for themselves. Instead, Betsy believes in the transforming power of proven treatment for those struggling with addiction and drugs, not enabling destructive behaviors that hurt themselves and our community. Her goal is for every person to have the opportunity to reclaim their dignity and become self-sufficient to end the cycle of homelessness on our streets.
